Don’t let the bed bugs bite…

Going to bed at night you don’t imagine you’ll become the evening feast of bed bugs, but sometimes these pests find their way into our homes… We’re here to help you get rid of Bed bugs!

Bed bugs (Cimex Lectularius) are nocturnal insects which come out at night to feed on the host’s blood (yourself). Sometimes these bed bugs are mistaken as dust mites.  They are flat and oval in shape that resembles something similar to an apple pip. Their size makes them perfect for squeezing in between paper-thin gaps, moving quickly and leaving no time hide until it’s daytime once again.

Bed bugs, unlike dust mites, are visible to the naked eye and will bite you several times in one sitting leaving you with severely damaged skin. People react differently to bed bug bites and some, are more susceptible to the bites than others. You might notice the bites straight away, within minutes, others may not notice a bed bug infestation until its population has massively grown. Furthermore, the reaction from the bites can take some people up to a week later for the skin to become irritated. Regardless of how long you’ve been dealing with those pesky bedbugs, or how many bed bugs you have to contend with on a nightly basis, our pest removal team are here to help.

Bed bugs are on the rise

With the huge increase in global travel comes a big jump in the UK bed bug population. Bed bug populations have been exploding, and global travel has made it very easy for these species to infest new locations. Bed bugs are often attracted to people’s clothing and luggage, and will easily hitch a ride when staying in hotels or accommodation. Be aware of accommodation where rooms are close to one another as it’s common for bed bugs to simply migrate from room to room, spreading the infestation further.

And always be careful when buying or acquiring second-hand furniture and avoid dragging beds and sofas off the street. If anything you’ve purchased has been infested with bed bugs, contact our friendly team for help.

What are the signs of bed bug infestation?

The most common sign of bed bug infestation is waking up with itchy areas you didn’t have when you went to sleep. Often these symptoms start if you have recently purchased a used bed or other items of furniture. Other signals that you have bedbugs are:

  • Small bloodstains on your pillowcases or bed sheets
  • Bed bug excrement on bed sheets, mattresses, clothes and walls. These look like small dark or rusty spots.
  • Eggshells shed skin and faecal matter in the areas where bedbugs reside
  • A musty, disagreeable odour that comes from the bugs’ scent glands

How can you get rid of bed bugs?

Bed bugs are well known as a challenging pest to get rid of, but here at The Bristol Pest Controller we have years of experience supporting our skills in eradicating them. We use the latest techniques and keep up to date with new research to ensure we are always one step ahead of their game.

With bed bugs, it is important that you contact a professional that can work with you and the environment to control and eradicate the infestation. We understand that everyone is different and so we create our treatment based around your needs with various different techniques available to treat the problem.

We know there is a wealth of information, do’s and don’ts on the internet so if you want anything explaining, give us a call we are happy to help.

Types of treatments

Chemical Treatment

We often use chemicals for their long-lasting (residual) effects, meaning that your home will have a barrier in place against any new bed bugs brought into the home. How long the effect lasts for depends on different environmental factors. Using chemicals alone can be enough to treat the problem, but this does depend on the environment and how heavy the infestation is.

Heat Treatment

We use directional dry steam to kill bed bugs and their eggs in one treatment. Because the steam is dry, it is safe to use on many of your personal belongings, reaching places, chemicals cannot. It is effective against all stages of the bedbug life cycle, including its eggs as bedbugs have no resilience to high temperatures.

We always recommend having a combination of both heat and chemical treatments for the best results, but we do understand this is not always possible, talk to us to tell us about your circumstance and we will find the best treatment for you.

How long does it take to remove bed bugs with Heat Treatment?

Discovering a bedbug infestation in your home is unpleasant, but with heat treatment, you really can eradicate the pests completely and quickly – and without toxic chemical pesticides.

New heat-treatment solutions to insect infestations are extremely effective, providing a pesticide-free solution to bedbug problems. The discrete and eco-friendly bedbug elimination service from The Bristol Pest Company solves your problem in a single visit, with very little disruption to your house and routine.

Heat treatment works by heating up the bedbugs beyond the temperature where they can survive (see insect lifecycle), resolving the entire problem. The raised temperature kills not only exposed adult bugs and hidden bugs but also the eggs, larvae and pupae. You won’t have to worry about residual chemicals in your home, and you won’t have to find the time for repeat visits (something that is always required with chemical treatments).

What Do I Need To Do Now?

There are some preparations that need to take place to ensure the room is ready for our treatments, once you book your appointment, we will send you an advice sheet outlining the action needed to be taken, for instance removing items that are susceptible to heat e.g. oil paintings and make up.

How much does it cost?

We are dedicated to eradicating these pesky bugs and so we believe in a fair affordable pricing structure to suit all budgets and requirements.

For bed bugs we give an estimation of cost over the phone, based on the structure above. The price will be confirmed on our inspection before we continue with treatment as there are several factors that can influence the cost, for instance the level of infestation, amount of personal possessions and what we call ‘risk factors’. We only sell you what you need and we always look for the most effective treatment with minimal impact to you and your home or business.
