European Tree Bee Nest Removal Service

At The Bristol Pest Controller, we understand how important it is to protect the UK’s native bee species. The European Tree Bee, however, is a new invasive species that recently arrived to the stores of Great Britain just over 15 years ago. According to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, these bees have reached a record population high. Whilst the jury is still out there as to whether these bees are damaging to the UK’s natural habitats, as a species they are considered to be much more aggressive than your traditional native bee and are understood to be competing with the natural fleeting resources that our bees depend on. At The Bristol Pest Controller, we provide an expert removal service if you discover a nest of European Tree Bees for Bristol and the surrounding counties.

How do you Identify European Tree Bees?

The European Tree Bee, or sometimes the alternatively named Tree Bumblebee (Bombus hypnorum) is unique in appearance when put in contrast to the UK’s native bee species, so if you know what you’re looking for they are relatively easy to spot. The European Tree Bee’s body is fuzzy, with a ginger head, black abdomen and a white tail. Typically the Queen Bee comes out of hibernation earlier than most other bees, and as a species are quite hardy and resistant to a number of pesticides.

The most curious aspect of this bee species is that it frequently nests in tree hollows, bird boxes or cracks within old buildings. The European Bumblebee can be a cause for alarm for many people; in part, because they typically build their nests closer to human habitation than other species, but also because of the extremely high defensive drone activity and they can be very aggressive in protecting their hive.

These bees are typically very loud and as a result, it is not unusual for people to hear hive activity through their loft. These non-native bees are a cause for concern when they nest close to human habitation and defensive attacks on people are common if you are worried that you might have a European Tree Bee nest that needs taking a look at contact our professional bee team here today. Whilst The European Tree Bee are good pollinators they do not make honey, therefore, they are not highly sought after by beekeepers.

How do you Typically Treat a Nest of European Tree Bees?

When it comes to treating a nest of European Tree Bees we have various options available as a pest controller. If the bees are not intruding on you in any way then it might be an easier option to just leave them alone; however because of the nature of where they like to place their nests and in combination of their aggressive drone activity it is usually wise to contact a professional pest controller before deciding on a course of action. Although UK bee species are in decline, as a population the European Tree Bee is on the rise and as a non-native species pest control companies such as ours are allowed to fumigate them. If we believe that the presence of a Tree Bee’s nest is dangerous to human health, we may recommend that we eradicate the colony. If you have strong objections and if it is safe for our team to do so, we may be able to relocate the nest and colony to nearby woods as a last resort. Our trained bee removal team will happily discuss all the options available to you.
